Breakfast with Little Miss. Foodie

Lately, Anya showed little enthusiasm for her regular breakfast of oatmeal cereal mixed with milk formula and choice of fruits. At some point of the meal, she would keep her mouth tightly shut, even when the cereal was mixed with her favorite bananas or berries.

When it comes to feeding Anya, I am not adventurous. A tad "kia si" even perhaps. I imagine that she should stick to a strict diet of baby food and brown rice porridge with fruits, vegetables, egg yolk and threadfin all the way till she turns one. Over the weekend, I loosened up a teeny weeny bit by feeding her a few crumbs of my Dad's and SIL's birthday cake. Forget the teeny weeny bit, that was a biggie for me! And her too, considering how vehemently she was gesturing "please" for more after the first mouthful.

However, given the current crisis of her rejecting her baby food breakfast, I scurried to research on what other alternatives I can serve up to her. The Internet and a trip to the community library definitely provided quite a number of ideas and inspirations.

So this morning, I finally served up something different. It remains nothing adventurous. Just half a slice of lightly toasted white bread with cheddar cheese. Still, our Little Miss. Foodie totally digs the new item on the menu! After the first try, the vehement "please" came quickly. There were appreciative "Mmmmms..." and "Num num numumms...". And when it was time to move on to her favorite blended blueberries and strawberries, she actually pushed the spoon in my hand away! Hmmm... do we have a case of  here?

Quality Time

It was a Saturday spent indoors. We had pushed away LNY gathering invitations, favoring over some family time.

The afternoon was spent having a simple home-cooked late lunch, playing Monopoly DEAL, watching VeggieTales, and doing random things like looking through old albums and making lame attempts at pig-tailing Anya's hair.

Our plan for a nice dinner at one of those rustic cafes / eateries surrounded by quiet greenery / nature (think Riders Cafe or Spruce) was thwarted by the sudden downpour in the late afternoon. I believed I heard my lazy bones screaming "Home delivery!", and so we had pizza and ice-cream in front of the plasma while Anya and Muff did their best of distract us with all their little antics.

It was, in my opinion, a perfect Saturday for a long while. :)

Bad Hair Day

We were out during the whole of yesterday. It was church in the morning, followed by lunch with a girlfriend, then to a LNY visit before heading to my parents' place for dinner. The only times Anya got to nap was when we were transiting from place to place in the car. So it wasn't surprising that she was still recovering and was down for a long nap.

The thing that took me by surprise was the "Poof!" hair that greeted me when she woke up. Heh! Good thing we are spending this Valentine's day in a quiet way at home.

Looking Back: 10 months

Dearest Anya,

I know I keep exclaiming this every other month, but really! You have grown so much! From that 3.33 kg non-communicative immobile newborn, you are now a almost 9kg nimble pre-toddler! Mommy was observing you while you played by yourself in your room yesterday and realization dawned upon me that I was no longer staring at a baby but a little girl!

The past few weeks has seen the most growth spurt in your development in months. Mommy had started teaching you to sign "please" since you were seven months old but it had been one-way traffic. I was told by books and friends to keep doing it without expectations, that I will be rewarded one day. True enough! One afternoon when we were in Phuket, you whined for the grapes that Daddy and I were eating. My default response was, "Anya, say please?". You promptly signed it, your eyes never leaving those grapes that Daddy was holding. Daddy and I almost could not believe our eyes! We had to keep on asking you to sign again and again. Needless to say, you had ALOT of grapes that afternoon. Heh! Interestingly though, you stopped signing "please" a few days after we came back. I suspect that it was more of a case of refusal rather than forgetting. Hmpf!

Right before the magical "please" happened.

Other than signing "Please", you also grasped the concept of "gong xi gong xi", clapping, waving goodbyes and hellos, and hugging. Most of which you discovered during the Phuket trip. As a child who is easy with your smiles, your "gong xis", waves and claps are often coupled with a big grin plastered on your face. This has an infectious effect on people surrounding you.

Hugging means tightening your grasp while resting

During the Lunar New Year visits, I was apprehensive that you might be fearful and grouchy, being surrounded by new homes and crowds of strangers - one place after another. Thankfully, though you were coy at times, and often over-stimulated at the end of the day, your personality still shone through. Whenever someone gives you an angbao, your face would lit up as you gamely took it from the giver. Thereafter, you would bestow one of your infectious smiles in return and gladly gesture "gong xi" when prompted by us. You are very fond of angbaos, especially those cutesy ones with the face of a rabbit on it and two long ears sticking out on top. You would hold it tightly for up to hours and would yell at Daddy and Mommy if we tried to pry it out of your grasp after asking for it repeatedly to no avail.

Just before LNY, your top left front tooth finally sprouted. Finally. It must have caused you quite some discomfort as you have been salivating 24/7 and was not sleeping well during the week before the "culprit" was spotted. We expect to see the right front tooth very soon too as the gum area where it will be rooted has gone swollen and whitish currently.

These days, you are an adept crawler. You no longer like to be bounded within a confined area nor going into your walker (though we continue to coax train you to play in your play-barn for at least 30 minutes each day), preferring over crawling on fours. You like to crawl from room to room, exploring and reaching out for random item. You would hold it, taste it (an oversight on my part at times) and then bang it against the floor, before losing interest and then moving onto the next item.

Your latest fascinations: Balls
In addition, you have also been learning to stand. You can now heave yourself up to standing position using support of nearby furniture. Mommy has mixed feelings as I await the moment that you can walk, not knowing whether it will be easier or tougher on me.

Playtime-wise has become more and more fun. These days, I observe real play when you have a toy in front of you (e.g. Shape sorter) where you will try to figure it's purpose out instead of just banging and throwing the pieces. Again, I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, I am proud that you are figuring toys out. On the other hand, I find myself running out of things / ideas to keep you occupied at times! Mommies out there, help!

Veggietales video - my savior when all else fails to keep you occupied.

You especially enjoy your playtime with Daddy. Usually, it means LOADS OF adrenalin and laughter. Daddy believes that rough play is one of duties of Dads as he read off an article that children who grew up having regular rough and adrenaline-charged play with Dads tend to handle stress better. One of your favorite game with Daddy is what I call "Bang the pillows". Daddy would prop pillows and cushions against the wall on the bed. Next, he will place you on the bed right beside the cushions, facing up. Then, with his palms on your back, he would roll you over so that you will be wedge against the cushions (face in cushion), then back again. Without fail, there is loads of squeals, giggles, laughter and no doubt, adrenalin pumping, at every play!

The past month has indeed seen tremendous changes in you. Although it has been a tiring and stressful month for Mommy (and Daddy), we are enjoying every moment with you. So much joy and love has multiplied since you came along! Yes, it can be daunting, especially now that you refuse to fall asleep at night without us by your side. But even at times when you are crying, throwing a fit, we do see beauty in it all. People say that babies are a manipulative lot because they cry to get what they want. I disagree. You cry really because that is your only conceivable way of projecting your needs and desire. If well-prune, you will be able to communicate your thoughts and needs to us in a more desirable manner. In order for you to learn that, we have to teach you and lead by examples. As such, it becomes a pruning process for us too. That is the beauty of it.

I love you, my little bunny!

Loving you by the grace of God,
Mommy

Berry Breakfast

Her favorite breakfast presently are mashed blueberries and strawberries. The blessed girl! I remember I hardly get to eat strawberries until I was in my teens as my family were not well off and the only fruits that are stocked up in the kitchen are the typical oranges, apples and pears (leftovers from praying to idols and ancestors) and the coveted seasonal durians.

Here, I love the richness of their colors when being put together!

Happy 10 months old!

Golly! You are growing so fast!  Will be doing a proper report card on your past month's progress soon. Meanwhile, have a happy 10 months old at Ah Gong and Ah Ma's place, my little bun!

Dryness

This blog has been in hibernation in the past weeks. A result of my being physically drained and spiritually dried out.

A whirlwind of activities and chores over the span of last two weeks has taken a toll on me. I was stressed out, sleep-deprived and aimless. I lost sight of the focal point of my life and instead, allowed myself to be lost in the nits and grits of daily affairs and preparation of the next event on the calendar. Quiet times and partial sleep times all gave way to tasks and chores.

When the first day of CNY came and went, I found myself not enjoying it as much as I had anticipated to (since it was the first CNY for Anya), as I was clouded by dizzy spells and fatigue. On hindsight, the heap that I put on my plate was too much for me to take. It is a lesson learned the hard way. The Husband had to shuttle between work and aiding me, Anya suffered a big boo-boo in Phuket, while I became a fretful & emo wreck. My suspicion that I was overly consumed by the nits and grits of daily was divinely confirmed as I was led to 1 Corinthians 7:31, "those who use the things of the world, as if not engrossed in them. For this world in its present form is passing away", the moment I sat down for quiet time.

Presently, I am well-rested and sane once again. Mental recovery was almost overnight while two restful nights was all it took for me to regain my physical state. I knew recovery would not have been so fast had I not seek God. Praise the Lord! Now, back to settling Anya back to daily routine!
